If you’re worried you may have damaged your hearing, or you’ve noticed ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus) after being around loud noise, it’s a good idea to have your hearing checked by an audiologist. A hearing assessment allows us to identify whether your hearing has been affected and find out what support you might need now and in the future.
Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is one of the most common health and safety risks in New Zealand. According to the National Foundation for Deaf & Hard of Hearing’s 2021 report, around one in six cases of hearing loss in New Zealand is caused by noise exposure.
Like most types of hearing loss, noise-induced hearing loss is permanent. Once the delicate hearing cells inside the inner ear are damaged, they don’t grow back, which is why investing in good-quality hearing protection is so important.
If you’re heading to a concert, using power tools, riding a motorbike, or working in a noisy environment, keep a pair of earplugs or earmuffs handy and use them consistently. It is one of the easiest ways to protect your long-term quality of life.
