Earwax (also called cerumen) is a natural and important part of how our ears stay healthy. In most cases, earwax slowly makes its way out of your ears on its own. But sometimes wax can build up and cause blockages (also called impaction).

Signs of earwax buildup include:

When that happens, it’s important to know you’re receiving care from professionals who are trained and certified, and who use the safest techniques available.

All Resonate Health audiologists and health navigators have received a healthcare certification in earwax removal using microsuction. This qualification ensures our team meets the recognised standards of competence and safety, and can provide you with safe, effective services every time you visit us.

Here’s what that qualification means and why it impacts the quality of care you receive.

Summary
  • Earwax (cerumen) buildup can cause symptoms like reduced hearing, fullness, itching, or ringing (tinnitus), requiring professional removal when natural clearing fails.
  • Resonate Health's audiologists and navigators are certified in microsuction, the safest and most effective method for removing excess earwax without using water.
  • Microsuction utilises a gentle, medical-grade suction device and is preferred for treating mild to severe wax impaction, minimising the risk of damage associated with home cleaning methods.
  • The certification is a structured, hands-on clinical qualification accredited by leading bodies, including the British Society of Audiology and ENT UK, ensuring competence in clinical assessment, safe equipment use, and hygiene.
  • This qualification ensures customers receive safe, effective, and high-quality care for earwax removal that aligns with established clinical standards.
  • What is microsuction?

Microsuction is widely recognised as the safest, most effective way to remove excess wax without flushing water into your ear. It’s proven to remove mild to severe wax buildup, and is much safer than risking damage to your ears by attempting to clean them at home.

At Resonate, we use the world-leading Tympa Health system, which uses a small medical-grade suction device (a bit like a tiny vacuum for your ear) to gently remove excess wax. It offers all the benefits of traditional microsuction, with the addition of high-resolution video otoscopy, which allows us to capture images and show you inside your own ears.

What is a healthcare certification in earwax removal using microsuction?

This is a structured, hands-on clinical qualification delivered through Tympa Academy and accredited by the British Society of Audiology, ENT UK, and the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (BSHAA).

The certificate covers all essential skills your hearing health professional needs to perform safe wax removal, including

    - Clinical ear health assessment
    - Safe use of microsuction equipment
    - Infection prevention and hygiene protocols
    - Decision-making and scope of practice
    - Hands-on supervised training
    - Ongoing training

During their training, our team conduct 100% of their Clear Ears appointments under the direct supervision of a fully-qualified member of staff. They have daily check-ins with their support person and are overseen by our senior audiologist and MNZAS trainer, Jenny Stygall.

After their final assessment, each person is awarded the healthcare certification in earwax removal using microsuction. Ongoing training is also provided to ensure we deliver safe and effective services every time.

Hello! I’m Clara. After 24 years of practising audiology in New Zealand, I still think of myself as a young lady – chatty, curious and loving a good belly laugh. I was born in Zimbabwe 53 years ago and grew up in that wild and lovely country with my two sisters and two brothers. I came to New Zealand in 2002 and settled in Tauranga, where I joined the community choir and enrolled in the local library to enjoy my two life loves: music and reading.
