Hi, I’m Craig, one of the audiologists at Resonate Health Milford.
I got into audiology almost by chance: I originally trained as a primary school teacher, but after a few years, I found myself back at university completing a graduate diploma in health science. A lecture by the then head of the audiology department piqued my interest, and shortly after, I had applied for and been accepted into the audiology programme. And I haven’t looked back!
I have been fortunate to have worked in companies that have wanted to bring innovation and positive change to the audiology industry. As such, I’ve been part of the team that launched the first commercial teleaudiology service in New Zealand, fitting a hearing aid in Timaru from a studio in Auckland; took a converted bus into rural Taranaki to test and fit hearing aids for local kaumatua; and developed a nationwide hearing screening programme to provide accessible hearing services across the country.
I am focused on family-centred healthcare, examining how hearing loss impacts not just the individual but also the people and community around them. How can we, as audiologists, provide the best care to help the wider needs of the people around us? As such, I am undertaking a PhD through the University of Auckland, looking at the role of teleaudiology in a model of family-centred care.
Outside of work and study, I spend a lot of time at the theatre: I am on the committee of the Auckland Community Theatre Trust and a part-time judge for Showdown, a high-school theatre awards programme that has been running for over 20 years in Auckland.
