Can I just wear one hearing aid?

Many people ask, "Can I just wear one hearing aid?" Our honest answer is usually no. We do not recommend wearing one device, particularly if you have hearing loss in both ears.

Why should you wear two hearing aids?

Research shows that bilateral hearing aids (hearing aids used in both ears) significantly improve the results you receive from hearing aids. Wearing two hearing aids also reduces the cognitive load on your brain. When your brain is only receiving sound from one side, it has to work much harder to fill in the gaps, which can lead to listening fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and leave you feeling tired by the end of the day. Over time, this extra strain has been linked to increased risk of cognitive decline.

What is Amblyaudia?

There is also evidence that wearing a single hearing aid in cases of bilateral hearing loss can cause a condition called amblyaudia. Amblyaudia is an Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) where the brain suppresses auditory information from the unaided ear, creating a “lazy ear”. Amblyaudia often presents with difficulties in attention, speech comprehension, and reading.

Summary
  • Research shows that bilateral hearing aids (used in both ears) significantly improve results compared to wearing a single hearing aid.
  • Wearing only one hearing aid increases the cognitive load on your brain, leading to listening fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and increased risk of cognitive decline over time.
  • Wearing a single hearing aid in cases of bilateral hearing loss can cause amblyaudia, where the brain suppresses input from the unaided ear.
  • Resonate’s Unlimited subscription includes a pair of ReSound Vivia 9 devices for $90 per month, removing the cost barrier to getting two hearing aids.
