What is surfer's ear?
Surfer's ear is the common name for an abnormal bone growth within the ear canal. It is prominent under surfers, divers and people who work in conditions with cold air. Surfer's ear is not the same as swimmer's ear, although infection can result as a side effect. If you spend a lot of time in or around water, visit our Swimming & Surfing Ear Care hub for more guidance.
Surfer's ear will usually not exhibit any symptoms but can cause hearing loss, recurrent infections, discharge, a sensation of fullness in your ear, and recurrent wax impactions. Treatment involves medical management but may include surgery if symptoms become severe. It’s also worth being aware of other risks to your hearing, such as everyday noise exposure.
